Volunteers
Volunteers have many opportunities to serve. It is through our volunteers and their efforts that we are able to maintain the integrity of this unique historical estate and to ensure a pleasant and enjoyable experience for each guest who visits.

Volunteer Orientation
Group Volunteer Orientations are held in October and January to introduce potential volunteers to volunteer opportunities that are available at Bonnet House.

Training Classes
Full Training Classes are held in October and January to train new volunteers as guides and back-up guides for house tours. Training will consist of 4 classes 5 hours each.

Annual Guide Meetings

A mandatory meeting will be held in September, October and January for all guides and back-up guides as an update and refresher course. All volunteers must attend one of these meetings.

MAINTENANCE – FULL TIME-NON-EXEMPT

This position is responsible to perform general building and grounds maintenance. It is also responsible for preventative maintenance on all Bonnet House passenger trams and work trams. This position reports to the Curator.

Duties:

  1. Perform light carpentry, masonry work and painting on buildings, fences and walls.
  2. Perform light plumbing and electrical repairs; report any repairs that require professional assistance to Curator.
  3. Respond to Tour Assistant/Event Coordinator requests for light bulb replacement or other maintenance items in exhibit rooms and around Main House.
  4. Maintain the courtyard fountain.
  5. Clean gutters as needed or at least annually.
  6. Empty large trash receptacles on Veranda and grounds daily.
  7. Pick up and dispose of limbs/palm fronds and other debris on the trails, parking lot and around the Main House, Sloughs, Lily Pond, Island Theater and Desert Garden.
  8. Check for and remove animal feces from Veranda, Courtyard, Upstairs Porch, BoatHouseBridge,      ChickeeBridge and other areas daily.
  9. Supervise contractors working on property.
  10. Set up/breakdown chairs, tables, etc, move power box and cable for meetings, weddings and events as necessary.
  11. Power-wash or hose down as needed, especially after events.
  12. Maintain all air conditioning units, changing or cleaning AC filters monthly.
  13. Start and drive the Cadillac every other week.
  14. Replace water cooler bottles and assist in carrying boxes, moving furniture, etc.
  15. Fill brochure holders as needed.
  16. Maintain shop and landscape tools and shop work area
  17. Maintain irrigation systems.
  18. Clean veranda before and after events and as necessary.
  19. Pressure clean and seal boardwalks annually or as necessary.  Pressure clean all coral walkways in courtyard, at front door and off veranda to catering area and Chickee Bridge as necessary or at least annually.
  20. Purchase supplies after completion of appropriate forms and approval of CEO.
  21. Secure hurricane shutters and assist with securing the house and grounds as necessary.
  22. Oversee fire extinguisher and fire alarm inspections.
  23.  Schedule pulls for the landscape dumpster.
  24. Report concerns about buildings, grounds or collection to Curator or CEO.

Skills:

  • Basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to dependably work with minimal supervision.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years experience in a similar position.
  • Friendly, professional demeanor
  • Ability to walk without aid, work outdoors in heat and humidity, climb stairs, lift objects weighing 50 lbs. or less and carrying them for short distances.
  • Willing to work flexible hours especially in the event of weather or other emergency.

VISITOR SERVICES ASSOCIATE – PART TIME NON-EXEMPT
General Responsibilities

The Visitor Services Associate is the first point of contact for visitors coming to Bonnet House and must provide a positive first impression.  The position is responsible for the smooth operation of the Welcome Center and South Gate entrances and helps coordinate the day-to-day details of public tours with appropriate staff members and volunteers. This position reports to the Visitor Services and Administrative Manager.

Duties

  1. Open and set up Welcome Center or South Gate entrance register and secure banks.
  2. Greet Welcome Center/South Gate visitors.
  3. Give directional information.
  4. Answer visitor questions.
  5. Coordinate activities with the Welcome Center and South Gate entrances.
  6. Open/close the gate for public tours.
  7. Promote and sell memberships at Welcome Center and South Gate entrances.
  8. Sell merchandise and artwork displayed at the Welcome Center.
  9. Maintain a clean and dust free Welcome Center and South Gate entrances.
  10. Close cash drawer at close of business day.
  11. Take receipts, report and bank to Visitor Services and Administrative Manager.
  12. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills

  1. Experience in using cash register or POS system and handling cash/credit card transactions.
  2. Good arithmetic skills.
  3. Comfortable working with a variety of people.
  4. Good organizational and decision making skills.
  5. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  6. Punctuality.

Requirements

  1. High School Diploma/GED.
  2. Minimum of one year cash handling experience.
  3. Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  4. Outgoing personality and pleasant demeanor.
  5. Fluent in English
  6. Ability to stand, walk without aid, climb stars, lift objects weighing 20 lbs. or less and carry them short distances.
  7. Flexible in work schedule.
  8. Trustworthy.

Lead Guide
Lead Guides share the “Bonnet House Story” with visitors who take a tour of the main house. Lead Guides must first serve as a back-up guide and then attend a guide training course to learn the script for the tour.

Education Volunteer
Promote the Museum’s educational mission by providing accurate, informative and enjoyable programs of the Museum, which compliment the Sunshine State Standards. Introduce the Museum, conduct a special guided program for school children, and answer appropiate questions.
Skills Needed: Enthusiasm for history and sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with school groups; Dependability and flexibility; Ability to stay on one’s feet for two to three hours. Training and curriculum provided. Programs include History, Science and Art.

Hours Needed: As needed per registration of school.

Back-up Guide
Back-Up Guides assist the lead guide as visitors tour the main house. Back-Up guides help to maintain group control and oversee the collection as visitors move from room to room.
Skills Needed
: Enthusiasm for history and sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with groups of people; Dependability and flexibility; Ability to stay on one’s feet for two hours. Ability to follow instructions.

Nature Trail Interpreter
Nature Trail Interpreters share historical, environmental, and botanical facts of interes with visitors riding on the tram (a large golf cart seating 6 people) along the nature trail. It is preferred, for those who volunteer as nature trail interpreter, to have some knowledge of plant and tree identification. Training provided.

: Enthusiasm for history and sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with groups of people; Dependability and flexibility; Ability to stay on one’s feet for two hours. Ability to follow instructions. Current valid drivers’ license.
Ongoing/ Weekly: 1 x per week or twice a month.

Minimum: One 4 hour shift per week, or twice monthly.

Bridge Greeter
Welcome visitors and guests to Bonnet House during tours, weddings, receptions, corporate parties, and special events. The greeter is also available to give directional information to visitors and guests.
Skills Needed
: Enthusiasm for history and sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with groups of people; Dependability and flexibility; Ability to move around the courtyard for two hours.
Ongoing/ Weekly: 1 x per week or twice a month.

Courtyard Coordinator
Attends the Main House front entrance/Courtyard by checking admissions, monitoring courtyard, ensure all Self-Guided guests know rules and floor plan, make sure all rooms are monitored and be able to account for all guided tour positions and move guides when needed.

Museum Shop Assistant
Help mainain control and oversee items in the gift shop. The shop assistant is available to give directional information to visitors and to assist with pricing, inventory, wrapping and the display of merchandise.
Skills Needed
: Enthusiasm for sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with groups of people; Dependability and flexibility; Ability to stay on one’s feet for two hours.

Collections Volunteer
Work with the Curator in the care and maintainance of the archives, records and collection.
Skills Needed
: Enthusiasm for history and sharing with others. A willingness to learn; Ability to effectively interact with and communicate with groups of people; Dependability and flexibility; Computer skills, good eyesight, no allergies to dust or mold. Love examining old objects, books, and detail oriented. Comfortable using a small paintbrush.

Research & Library Volunteer
Create a research library of the Bartlett’s book collection.
Skills Needed
: Computer or typing ability. Know the alphabet and organizing. Love looking at old and rare books, examining and learning about old books, some off-site research at libraries or other museums. Retired Librarian would be a perfect match.
Ongoing/ Weekly: 1 x per week or twice a month.
Days Needed: Monday – Friday

Data Input.      Garden Volunteer. Handy Man Volunteer
Compile and input data in various formats for events and files.
Skills Needed
: Knowledge of computers and various software programs. Ability to decipher handwriting and organize data to input into databases. Ability to climb the stairs to the offices.
Ongoing/ Weekly: 1 x per week or twice a month.
Days Needed: Monday - Friday
Hours Needed: Volunteer will pick time and day.

Garden Volunteer - Work with Grounds Manager in the care and preservation of the Gardens
