East Meets West: The Six Week Honeymoon in Asia by Marjorie DaVanzo
Helen wrote 15 poems about Japan and Frederic painted many scenes inspired by temples and teahouses he saw in the land of the rising.
Considering the Bartletts’ fascination with Impressionism in 1919, they would have been intrigued by the Ikebana controversy occurring in Japan at the very same time. Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, was being reframed by a creative innovator Unshin Ohara who challenged the norm. Both the Impressionists and Ikebana headmaster Ohara were vilified for daring to be different in their respective art forms at the turn of the century.
This lecture will include a demonstration of Ohara’s vision of modern Ikebana.
