‘Through a Flowering Place’ film series & Cultural Events commemorating journeys to freedom undertaken by six inspiring women who lived and traveled Florida’s Underground Railroad.

Grace Arts Florida, in collaboration with local artists and cultural contributors from several states and countries, is proud to present a free captivating film series titled “Through a Flowering Place: Women of the Saltwater Railroad.”

This series of short films and cultural events is part of a year-long ‘City of the Arts’ initiative of cultural events featuring multiple artistic disciplines – made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward.

Through the Flowering Place: Women of Florida’s Saltwater Railroad with Clare Vickery, Founder of Grace Arts Center, a Florida cultural non-profit organization in 2011.

Free for members / $5 non-members. Registration Required by 2:30pm Friday, March 8th.

This presentation will be offered in person and via Zoom.  (All sales are final and tickets are non-refundable)

Speaker: Evan Bennett, PhD, Professor, Director, Voting Rights History Civic Literacy Project

Summary: Florida’s coastal spaces face challenges, from development to pollution, that are set to grow more critical in the next century. Dr. Evan Bennett argues the challenges are best understood as historical problems and should be viewed from a historical perspective. Dr. Bennett will take you on a journey through 2,000 years of Florida coastal history and show how people have interacted with the shoreline through time. He’ll also help you understand the big challenges we’re facing today, like development, pollution, and sea level rise, all through the lens of the past

Bonnet House Begins its 2013 Lecture Series

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens begins its 2013 Lecture Series Monday, January 14th with a morning lecture from 10am – 11:30am.  The first of three lectures is “Broward Stories of Diversity and Change: A Musical Journey” with oral historian and jazz singer Dr. Kitty Oliver. The second lecture is scheduled for Monday, February 11th from 6:00pm-7:30pm with descendant of south Florida’s first barefoot mailman, archaeologist and author Harvey Oyer on “The Adventures of Charlie Pierce: The Last Egret”. The third and final lecture is with Dr. Michele Williams on health and healing titled “Medical Paradigms in Old and New Worlds” on Monday, March 4th from 6pm to 7:30pm.

Bonnet House Begins its 2012 Lecture Series

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens begins its 2012 Lecture Series Monday, January 9th with an evening lecture from 6pm – 7:30pm.  The first of three lectures is “Fort Lauderdale: A Brief History” with author and historian Susan Gillis. The second lecture is scheduled for Monday, February 6th from 10am-11:30am with archaeologist and author Robert Carr on “The History of the Everglades”. The third and final lecture is with poets and authors Rick McKenzie and Roger Reep on Monday, March 5th from 10am-11:30am and is titled “Poems of Animal Consciences”.
