Preserving Bonnet House

The Bonnet House property was purchased in 1895 by Hugh Taylor Birch. While the property had already experienced over 4,000 years of Florida history at the time it was purchased, the state of Florida looked nothing like it does today. Although much time has passed, the Bonnet House property still encompasses one of the last examples in South Florida of a native barrier island habitat. We are fortunate to be one of the few places in Florida to include five distinct ecosystems and an abundance of native plants and wildlife.

These five unique ecosystems include the Atlantic Ocean beach and primary dune, a freshwater slough, the secondary dune which includes the house site, mangrove wetlands, and a maritime forest. To complement the natural vegetation, the grounds also contain a Desert Garden composed of arid plantings, a hibiscus garden, and the main courtyard planted with tropical vegetation.

Our stunning variety of tropical vegetation includes but is not limited to mangroves, saw palmetto, blue porterweed, wild coffee, bougainvillea, and plumeria. Bonnet House also showcases various blooming examples of orchids in our greenhouses and throughout the estate all year round.

If you are interested in learning more about our fascinating ecosystems, and specific plant varieties, we encourage you to participate in our Education Programs . Our Educational Programming enlivens our mission statement and supports Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards by offering onsite classes, field trips, and virtual lessons in Florida history, nature, art, and design.
These programs:
● Integrate character education
● Involve hands-on activities
● Provide various choices of curriculum enrichment
● Conform to the National Trust for Historic Preservation curriculum guidelines

Here at Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, we pride ourselves on providing unique and interesting opportunities for our guests to learn more about our estate, its owners, and Florida’s beautiful ecosystems. But none of this would be possible without our passionate and engaging volunteers. These dedicated individuals help us to educate guests, and care for our many species of plants. Our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of Bonnet House and they make all of our goals come to fruition.

Whether it’s everyday operations, special evening events, or gardening, Bonnet House couldn’t operate as it does without our team of volunteers. Broward Attractions and Museums Month (BAMM)

September is Broward Attractions and Museums Month (BAMM), which encourages visitors to experience the diversity of cultural treasures throughout Broward County. During September, visitors may buy one admission and get a second admission for free to 13 participating museums and attractions in Broward County, while five additional museums offer free admission, as part of the BAMM promotion.

Adventures await you right outside your door! Discover new artists or ancient artifacts, ride on a riverboat or an airboat, explore a botanical garden and historic house or feed a flamingo…and so much more.

Live Music In Fort Lauderdale: Concert Under The Stars Series

Here in Fort Lauderdale, we are fortunate enough to have an abundance of talented performers throughout the community. Due to our culturally-rich history in Fort Lauderdale, a variety of musical stylings can be heard around every corner, including here at Bonnet House! In fact, to kick off the new year, Bonnet House is excited to host our annual Concert Under The Stars series, featuring a diverse array of musical performances.

This magical outdoor concert series will begin on Thursday, January 23rd from 6:30pm-8:00pm. Guests who are 18+ will have the opportunity to enjoy live performances at the beautiful Bonnet House Estate on our tent-covered veranda. We will even be featuring signature cocktails at the bar, as well as a selection of fine wine and cheese. Each night in the series will include a musical concert by a different performer or band from right here in Fort Lauderdale.

The series will begin on January 23rd with the Michael Masci Quartet with Danny Bacher . They will be performing popular selections from The Great American Songbook starting at 7:00pm. On February 13th, Bonnet House will welcome students from the University of Miami Frost Opera Theater . Their performances will reflect the broad range of programming in the twenty-first century, including Baroque opera, as well as some of the most progressive works of our time. This outdoor concert series will continue with two performances in March. The first will take place on March 12th with a performance by the Lynn University String Quartet . On March 26th, our series will conclude with the acoustic band, SOSOS . Their music is based around root instruments such as upright bass, pump organ, banjo, mandolin, djembe, acoustic guitars, drums, melodica, and even a box of rocks. Explore The Natural Beauty of Fort Lauderdale

As residents of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, we are incredibly proud of our community, and its rich cultural history. We’d like to take some time to highlight some other Fort Lauderdale attractions that you can enjoy with the whole family!

Bonnet House – is situated on a coastal barrier island. Much of the natural environment of barrier islands has been lost today to commercial development. A walk along the Nature Trail allows you to step back in time and experience a rare piece of old South Florida.

In addition to being open for public tours, Bonnet House hosts an annual week-long sparkling Holiday Magic festival of trees and décor, an annual series of outdoor music concerts, an annual orchid festival and offers adult educational programs in art, ornithology, orchid cultivation, and lectures as well as educational programs for Broward County schools and homeschool groups.

NSU Art Museum – located in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, The NSU Art Museum is home to diverse and innovative collections of art from around the world. Founded in 1958, NSU Art Museum aims to provide opportunities for individuals to access, learn from and be inspired by exceptional art from across the globe, and from different time periods. They have used their vast space (83,000 square feet, to be exact) to house over 6,000 works of art. They boast a wide array of collections that feature artists ranging from the American realist, William Glackens, to post-WWII, avant-garde artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Stranahan House & Museum – Stranahan House was constructed in 1901 by Frank Stranahan and his wife, Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, Ft. Lauderdale’s Founding Father and first school teacher, respectively. It is the oldest surviving structure in Broward County and has served multiple purposes in the county’s history. The Stranahan House & Museum is committed to
telling the fascinating story of the birth of our community through the Stranahan’s lives and the beautiful home they created.

Flamingo Gardens – Flamingo Gardens is home to one of the last natural jungle growths in South Florida, with over 3,000 tropical and subtropical plant species, including the largest tree in the state of Florida. Their Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to over 90 native species,
making it the largest collection of Florida Native wildlife in the state! The Flamingo Garden’s mission is to depict, preserve, and provide education about the natural and cultural heritage of South Florida and the Everglades.

These beautiful gardens, wildlife sanctuary, and historic Wray Home Museum have been delighting visitors of all ages for 90 years. Don’t miss this fun and educational South Florida attraction!

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society – The Fort Lauderdale Historical society is dedicated to preserving and sharing material from Ft. Lauderdale’s past so that present and future generations can stay connected to and inspired by their predecessors, and plant their own roots in our community. The Historical Society includes a 1907 house museum and three other 1905
historic structures, as well as a museum of changing and permanent exhibitions. They also offer docent-lead and self-guided tours 7 days/week.

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens and Kelly’s Landing Seafood Restaurant present Cruisin’ Down the River. Take a boat ride with Bonnet House down the New River Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 5:00 p.m on the famous Carrie B paddlewheel boat. Enjoy wine and tasty treats from Kelly’s Landing and live music from the Gold Coast Banjo Band. Admission is $45 for members and $55 for non-members and includes two glasses of wine along with a lite snack. A cash bar will also be available onboard. 18th Annual Juried Art Exhibit, Making New Impressions, Opens March 8

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens 18th Annual Juried Art Exhibit and Fundraiser, Making New Impressions, opens Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 6:00p.m. Enjoy an evening of food, cocktails, music and art on the beautiful Bonnet House Estate. All of the art work selected for the competition is for sale and 50% of the proceeds help support the preservation of Bonnet House. Bonnet House is honored to welcome Patricia Watson as the exhibit’s juror. Dr. Watson was a founder, President of the Board and Executive Director of the Riverdale Art Center in Riverdale, New Jersey, a non-profit art gallery and art education center in northern New Jersey. She worked closely with local philanthropists and William Paterson University to establish the center and help emerging artists from that school and the local area to exhibit and sell their art. She oversaw the renovation of a 19th-century factory to house the art center and gallery, and mounted and marketed exhibitions on a monthly basis. She organized three very well attended “Art of Food” festivals that included local chefs, plein air painting and exhibitions, silent auctions, music, dinner and dancing.

“Making New Impressions” showcases artists from throughout Florida

Bonnet House is working to make the event a celebration of art from various perspectives that attracts long-time patrons and new guests.  All guests and participating artists are invited to cast votes for their favorite artist in the exhibition.  The artist receiving the highest number of votes will receive the People’s Choice Award, awarded that evening.  All of the artwork in the Impressions competition will be available for sale with 50% of the proceeds benefiting the ongoing preservation of Bonnet House and its cultural programming that reach over 70,000 visitors, including 8,000 area youth each year.  The Impressions exhibition will be on display from March 8 through April 29, 2018 during Bonnet House regular tour hours.

Concerts Under the Stars Opens January 23

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens kicks off its 18th season of the Young Artist Music on Thursday, January 23rd at 7pm with a performance by the University of Miami’s Frost Opera Theater. We are delighted to offer the Fort Lauderdale community what we consider to be the ‘best deal in town’. Wine, dessert and coffee are donated by Whole Foods Market this year and are included in the price.

The season continues on February 13th with Florida Atlantic University Latin Vocal Ensemble. On March 13th we have Lynn University String Quartet and for our fourth and final performance on April 10th we have Florida Grand Opera’s rising stars.

 Individual tickets range from $35 – $45 per performance and series tickets from $120 – $160, everyone can enjoy an evening under the stars like no other Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale graphic design honors class designs our posters each year with this year’s winner being Paul Tran.

 What started as community outreach has become one of our most treasured programs. We are looking forward to this very special 18th anniversary series.

Bonnet House Seeks Volunteers

With five distinct eco-zones and former owners whose interests ranged from art, poetry, and music to natural conservation and organic agriculture, Bonnet House has nurtured eclectic interests for almost ninety-five years.  There’s something for everyone to enjoy here, and the same can be said of our volunteer opportunities.  Looking for something peaceful and quiet?  The courtyard and bridge aren’t that way all the time, but greeting guests there will give you ample opportunity (most days!) to enjoy the natural habitat and gardens.  How about something more active with lots of visitor interaction, reading an audience, and telling a great story?  Guiding house tours might be for you.  How about sales?  The Museum Shop is always in need of extra help.  And no matter which role you choose, you’ll be interacting with other like-minded volunteers who have more passion and interest for the remarkable Bonnet House estate than you can imagine.

Fall is a Good Time to Review Estate Plans…or Create One

No one likes to think of his or her passing from this world, but death is an event that we all will share in common sooner or hopefully, much later.  Putting together an estate plan can seem daunting, but it is really a fairly simple process for most people.  Not only will it relieve family and friends of sometimes difficult decisions, it is also an empowering process that allows one the opportunity to take control of how assets accumulated in life will pass.  As you begin gathering year end documents for the tax season, fall is also a good time to revisit estate plans—particularly if there has been a major life event in the past year—or to create one if you are currently without a will and/or trust.  If Bonnet House has meant something to you during life, consider leaving a bequest in your estate plan.  For sample language for a bequest to share with your attorney, contact Patrick Shavloske at 954-703-2603 or [email protected].

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens will be hosting a movie night on the lawn presented by Whole Foods Market on Thursday, December 12 at 7:00pm. The featured movie will be Elf with Will Ferrell. Need an excuse to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful Bonnet House Estate? How about a sunset picnic and movie? Bring your beach chair and snacks, Bonnet House will provide beer, wine and free popcorn. The event will take place on the Hibiscus Garden lawn near the Museum Shop, entrance is through the Welcome Center. Don’t miss a wonderful excuse to enjoy cool winter nights with family and friends — come out for this fun event at Bonnet House, compliments of Whole Foods Market Fort Lauderdale! Need directions?
